Marketing is a Process, Not an Event

Over the past few years, I have worked with a number of companies. There were some questions that came before me over and over again and the questions were asked to me by many new marketers out there, questions are like:
- Why it’s taking a lot of time to get some results?
- Why we are not getting any sales?
- Why we are not getting any traffic?
and many more.
The irony is, the question appears before new marketers within a few days after they start to work with some company or an individual.
On the other hand, they also told me that there were some statements from the Boss, Manager, or other Seniors in a company. The statements were like:
- What are you doing? We’re not getting results.
- Hurry up! Get sales within the next 7 days.
- Rank us higher in the next 14 days.
- Rank us #1 on Google within a short period of time.
and a lot more out there that don’t even make sense.
Now, let me clear you some of these questions. At first, I’d like to clear you that ranking #1 on Google could be done within a short frame of time, but with Black-hat SEO. Yes! Some marketers can break the algorithm to rank you on the first page of SERP.
But what after you’re done ranking #1 on Google? As soon as Google will get to know you’ve broken the algorithms, you’ll get penalized and might be permanently banned. This is not useful if you’re thinking for the long run.
For your better understandings, here is a screenshot from ahrefs.com on ‘how long does it usually take to rank #1 on Google“

You can check out: How long does it take to rank organically on the first page of Google.
Here is another screenshot that Google is showing at the top. It is also saying, it takes about 3-6 months to rank if you do SEO.

People believe if they hear some words from some recognized person, so let’s talk about Brian Dean (an internationally recognized SEO expert and founder of Backlinko), in one of his videos, he states that “It took me 6 months to get some significant results” when he was doing SEO with his team on a regular basis.
Next comes Neil Patel, most of probably you know him, for those who don’t:
He is a New York Times best-selling author. The Wall Street Journal calls him a top influencer on the web, Forbes says he is one of the top 10 marketers, and Entrepreneur Magazine says he created one of the 100 most brilliant companies. He was recognized as a top 100 entrepreneur under the age of 30 by President Obama and a top 100 entrepreneur under the age of 35 by the United Nations.
He itself states that it took on an average at least 100 days to rank on the first page while you continue to do SEO even if you have great domain authority. So, for new sites expected time is comparatively more than this.

Although the ranking of a webpage depends, to know more about it, you can walk through one of his blog posts: How long does it really take to rank at the top of the Google’s search results: a Data-driven Answer
I’ve seen the days when I was working with my team whole the day and didn’t get even a single quality back-link. A sustainable business requires time and patience and smart work in a strategic way.
It’s just about SEO! There is a lot more falls into the category of digital or Internet marketing. But, the fact is that all things take time. It’s said, “Marketing is a process, not an event”. This is what I’m explaining to the people for years.
Let’s break it down in this blog post, what does it mean?
Many small business owners and startups think marketing is something to be done once. Business owners think this way, ‘Marketing is to be done when they have money and time, they think marketing could be stopped once they get busy’.
Here is a brutal truth, to remain in business or to get success in business, marketing is required to be done consistently. You could and should never ever stop marketing even if you’re too busy.
The reason why I’m saying so is, once the wave of your business dries up you’re left with nothing and you have to start from scratch again which is time-consuming and expensive. One more reason is, if you’ll stop marketing, your competitors will definitely do and will win the race, you’ll be out of the race.
Let’s consider an example to explain to you: There is a brand ‘Jaipur Rugs‘. This is an old company which is well-established. They have a huge fan following and a massive amount of customers across the globe. They have an annual turnover of over 150 crores.

You might be thinking that they do not need to market themselves on this stage when they are established and developed. But they are continuously investing in marketing, they run Facebook Ads & Google ads. Also, they invest in social media marketing and in other internet marketing services like SEO, SMO, etc.
You know why? They want their company to remain in the race and don’t want their competitors to win. Here are some sample Google Ads they are running including Instagram Ads.

This is the one example, there are a lot more out there. Even the most popular brands including Apple, Coca-Cola, Even Google, invest billions on Marketing. Probably you might have seen Ads from these brands on social media or on YouTube or on Webpage.
When these popular brands are investing in marketing till date then you can better understand why is it necessary and why it needs to be continuous. These brand are known to most of the people, then still they are marketing their products and services, then why should you not?
What you can conclude with this?
To build a sustainable and successful business and to make a strong brand that leaves a great impact on the audience is to invest in your business. Put efforts and invest in a marketing plan. Once you have a marketing plan, start following it! Revise your marketing plan every year at least once or whenever needed, tweak it, renew it as your business grow and evolves.
