Five Keywords a Good Leader Should Remember

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Today, a lot has been spoken on the subject of leadership. Everyone is a leader. We all lead our lives and our lives may lead others. But the real question is whether the leading is positive. Often people restrict leadership to position, power and recognition, but leadership goes beyond that.

Here are some of the characteristics a good leader should personify and exhibit:

Selfless

A good leader never helps and supports his team member with the anticipation and expectation to only receive something in return. In fact, leadership is all about being selfless and focuses on others. A true leader looks for the development of others and not build one’s own fiefdom. Good leaders invest time in others and bring out the best in them. In other words, a leader produces many effective individuals like himself.

Mindful

A good leader helps in maximizing the potential in his team by building them up and equipping them with the right tools and strategies. A leader offers ways to perfectly collaborate and create synergies across diverse teams and entities. The role of leader is to devote attention to every single solitary member of the team. The leader must understand the needs and challenges that his/her team member is facing. Thus, mindfulness to the needs of the team is an important characteristics every leader should have. Being proactive and understanding others are some of the key important attributes a leader should possess.

Approachable

Every team member should be able to walk up to the leader and share suggestions, voice out opinions and feel secure confiding into the leader. Unfortunately, every leader talks about the open door policy, but has closed minds. The positional leaders fear that if they do not portray themselves as curt and disciplined, people will take them for a ride. The whole ideology rests on mistrust. If leaders trust employees, they would have an open mind to possibilities within the team and businesses.

Communication

Good leaders understand the need for constant communication with the team. Communication is the oxygen for any relationship. The day a leader ceases to express and articulate his thoughts, team members take the liberty to draw their own conclusions. This often leads to confusion and misunderstanding within the team. Each team member’s roles and responsibilities should be well defined and feedback should be offered at regular intervals. When employees feel left out, they tend to take their own course of action, which may conflict with the interests of the organization. All of this happens when the leader fails to communicate and set expectations.

Encouragement

If the vision of a leader is merely focused on the weaknesses of others, then such leadership will never be able to achieve much. The world today lacks encouragement. A little bit of encouragement leads even the most broken individual into a path to wholesome. Unfortunately, some leaders want to always stay in control and excoriate people for the slightest mistakes. A good leader encourages people to leap beyond their capacity. In other words, good leaders act as catalysts for people to outperform and realize their true potential and worth.

While this list is not exhaustive, but even if an individual exhibits these characteristics, good leadership is guaranteed there.
