What seems me more than worse is, stress because of a partner or because of a relationship suck! It leads to more stress from day to day life, because once you’re stressed, you’ll not be able to handle the tasks that you perform on a daily basis. So, it is required you to manage stress in a relationship in order to maintain your mental, physical, social and emotional health.

I’m listing some of my personal tested and widely used actionable and proven methods to overcome stress in a relationship.

1. Identify Your Priority

Identify Your Priority - How to manage stress in a Relationship

Someone wisely said, “if you get hurt from a person because of his words then you have two options, if the person is important to you, forget the words and if words are important to you, forget the person.”

You might have a question, why I’m using this proverb here? or how is it related to this topic? Let me tell you one thing, in a relationship the major reason for stress is somewhere initiate with words used during the conversation.

If your partner means more than the cause of your stress, then make it clear to your partner that your relationship is still more important for you than anything else. For example, you can say- “I am extremely sorry. I am walking through the challenging times and this is the only reason for XYZ happened between us. You know you mean a lot for me.”

2. Deal together with stress, not individuals

Always deal with situations with your partner as a team. If you’re facing difficult times, look for the solution together. Just keep your ego in a corner and think about your problem from every possible dimension. You must be like, “What can we do?” instead of “What can I do?”

Make sure you’re committed to the relationship, no matter how tough your time is, you must be like, ‘we can together deal with this problem’. In fact, stress is a test for a relationship. If you still don’t want to stay together, then there is no better way, state it clearly.

3. Talk it out

It’s a very common practice, after being having a worse conversation or in stress, couples are less likely to talk to each other. But You should talk! I’ll highly recommend you to sit down and try to relax and take a step to talk to each other about your stress, or you can ask your partner about the cause of his/her stress.

‘Talk it out’ is necessary because you get to know about the cause of stress. If you know the cause, you can look for the solution and lessen the stress. You’re in a relationship because of some reasons, you care for them, you love them. Don’t let your relationship ruin, help out your partner in times of stress.

Knowing that someone is there with you and willing to listen to you is a great thing that could make you feel better. When you talk to your partner, they’ll show their love and don’t forget why you picked them in the first place.

4. Remember to be kind

I’ve observed a number of cases; married couples are less likely to ill-natured. The reason is less stress or stress for a short period of time. After having the marriage, you have an option to handle your stress in a far better way. If relationship itself causing stress, then apologizing to your partner and think over it can make you feel better.

Remember, your partner has their own stress, their own situations to deal with and much more stuff there to handle. If you’ll think this way, you’ll have a good understanding of each other. One thing for sure you can do is, make sure be kind all the time. When you’ll be kind, your relationship will go longer and keep you connected with your partner.

5. Find an Individual form of release

Find an individual form of release - how to manage stress in a relationship

There are some reasons, why I’m mentioning this in the end, I just want you to solve the things together instead of alone. But things can’t be that much ideal. This method is for those who’re not intended to sort out the things together.

This is last but not least! Doesn’t matter what kind of stress you have, and for what reasons? It’s more important you should have a release. You’re required to have a consistent and working method that works for you to get rid out of stress (in my case, self-monitoring is the method that works best for me till date).

If it’s about a relationship, it’s equally important for you to overcome the stress that too individual because, as mentioned, things can’t be ideal. Maybe you’ll not get the chance to implement the above-mentioned points. You need to know how to self-soothe and get your head in the centre individually.

Your method can be as simple as running and doing yoga and as complicated as having a weekend out, you may need to lower your BP. Doesn’t matter what is it? But, you need to look for a way that helps you to relieve your stress without your partner. This will give you a perspective when you’ll get together and talk.
