Depression is a common psychic disorder that has affected over 300 million people across the globe. According to WHO, the number of women suffering from depression is more than men. In the worst cases, depression can lead to death.

You may believe or not, the effective anti-depressants on this planet do not come from the bottle of pills. But from more sleep, taking out time for hobbies, etc. Making some changes in your life would help you to boost your health & mood and hence prevent depression. I’m going to list the best techniques you can use to avoid depression.

1. Exercise Regularly & Take Care of Your Body

This is one of the best things you can do to keep your mental health better. According to the Mayo Clinic, exercise helps in the treatment of depression and also prevent depression in several ways:

  • Exercise raises your body temperature that results in the calmness of the central nervous system.
  • Exercise releases some chemicals like endorphins in your brain, which could be helpful in positive mood swings.
  • Exercise reduces chemicals in the immune system that helps to reduce depression.

There is not a particular exercise, all types of exercise are best to avoid depression. If you don’t know much about exercise, you opt to take the reference from the sources available on the Internet or you can join the sports team (or Yoga or Kickboxing).

Practice using stairs instead of using lifts and elevators. Make it (doing exercise regularly) a habit. This way you can maintain your health and keep up your fitness level, it works best preventing depression.

2. Sleep Well – Take the Proper Amount for Sleeping

Most of the people, especially young ones get to the irregular and inadequate amount of sleep, this leads to depression and other mental illness. In order to maintain the efficiency of your brain and body, you need to take the regular and proper time to sleep.

It is said that sleeping 8 hours is good, but I’ll not be ideal here. In today’s hectic age, it’s hard to sleep this much of hours, and there is not a specific period of time to sleep. You, yourself can decide what are the best sleeping hours for you to maintain your creativity.

If you’re suffering from depression, make sure to go to bed at the same time every day and turn off your screens earlier than normal. Recent research has proved that getting a proper time sleep helps you to rid out of depression and boost your brain performance. A  power nap is quite useful too!

Here’s how you can get better sleep:
  • Don’t look at the screens at least 1 hour before you sleep not even your phone.
  • You can meditate before you go to bed.
  • Use a comfortable mattress and use lose clothes (it’s better to use inner garments only)
  • Avoid making use of caffeine post noon.

3. Eat Healthy and Drink Plenty of Water

A proper diet is required for both mental and physical fitness. Our body & brain needs the proper mixture of all the necessary nutrients to function properly.

Consuming a low-fat diet, vitamins rich, nutrients, omega-3s (source – fish, walnuts, flaxseeds), folic acid could be helpful for mood regulation and balance. You’re what you eat, eat healthy, stay healthy.

Minimize the use of Alcohol, caffeine, excessive sugar, and high-fat foods. Use fruits and vegetables more in your meal. Drink 6 to 8 glasses of water daily. If you’ll start to implement all the mentioned words, you’ll see, your stress will fade away and hence prevent depression.

4. Find Passion in Your Life

Sometimes, it may happen that you’re doing exercise on a regular basis, you’re taking proper sleep, and even you’ taking a proper diet, but you may still feel depressed. Because nothing can boost your mood like having a purpose for life. According to Blue Zones, people having a purpose for their life tends to live seven years longer than those who don’t.

A number of surveys have shown that people who use to exercise regularly, take proper diet and sleep with hobbies are live a comparatively healthier life. Make sure to take out time for your hobbies and interests.

Do find a purpose for your life, live your dreams and give them time. Find activities and people you love enjoy then give time to them. When you’ll have a sense of purpose, it’ll improve your mood and overcome your risk of depression.

5. Try Talking Therapy

This is the most effective and widely popular way to overcome stress. In many cases, it is found to be more effective than medication. This is not only therapy, in actual it’s something doctors and psychiatrists use to identify the actual cause of depression and respond accordingly to serve you best.

You may concern your doctor and even with your family and friends about the root cause of your depression. Talk to them happily and you will see, your depression starts to reduce itself.

6. Avoid Common Triggers

Make it a practice to avoid triggers that are the cause of your depression as much as you can.

However, this is not so simple, it might be impossible as well. Most of the times, your job seems you a trigger, but you can’t leave a job easily. So, make sure to think twice before you take any life-changing decision.

The great thing is that even under depression you know what is your good and what is bad for you. Individuals know their triggers, so work towards managing them and avoiding them as much as possible.
