What is the Job of HR?

Reading Time: 4 minutes

I’d like to start this blog post by highlighting the Job profile of an HR. So, let’s get started.

Human Resource (HR) works for either one dedicated company or a few companies with the contract (they are referred to as consultants or Job providers). Their work is to recruit the personnel for an organization.

HRs broadcast the vacancies through different methods like advertising through Radio channels, publishing on classifieds section in newspapers, calling multiple people through telephones or mobiles and many other mediums are likely to be used.

At first, they call many people for the respective Job Postings, screen them accordingly and guide them in order to attend the interview as feedback.

After screening, the next step is to recruit the candidate and place them to their respective jobs. Let me mention a few points to clear you the step by step procedure of the work or Job Profile of HR, the following is the first stage of Job Profile handled by any HR.

What is the job of HR?
  1. Run a campaign for the vacancies by various means like Job Fairs, the collection of multiple Curriculum Vitae from interested candidates directly or via Job Portals like naukri.com, monster.com, indeed.com, shine.com and much more similar to these.
  2. Call the candidates to study their strengths and weaknesses.
  3. Monitor the Candidate’s skills and guide them as per the Job Profile (s)he is been called for.
  4. Screen them based on their face to face interview, dressing sense, presenting sense, communication skills, soft skills, Product or Job Knowledge (and sometimes even the knowledge of Organization they are being interviewed for), few rounds of tests to examine the level of awareness the candidate has. Also, to check the candidate’s education and experience.
  5. Placing the Candidate as an employee of the Organization depending on the scale of scores in step numbered 4 (above).
  6. Confirming with the employer if the candidate is selected or rejected.
  7. Provide the feedback as per the results of the interview to the Candidate.
  8. If (s)he is a select then HR explains about the nature of Job, Job timing, Offs, Dress Code (if any) and few more similar instructions about the Organizations (Do’s and Don’ts).
  9. If in the worst case (s)he is rejected then HR provides the feedback, after which HR either refers to the candidate for other vacancies from different processes provides the time limit to re-apply again.
  10. Processes Paperwork of the selected Candidates.
  11. For new employees, HR conducts Orientation programs.

From the above-mentioned points, we got an idea on the nature of Job about HR. Now, it’s time to understand the responsibilities of HR for his employees or candidates, below are the few Responsibilities or Roles of HR.

Roles and Responsibilities of HR
  1. HR serves as an ERM (Employee Relationship Manager). HR learns the concerns (if any that needs to be addressed) faced by the employee and either handles the concern if there is another workaround for the issue faced by the employee or the HR takes the concern to the higher level where the concern can be addressed. Hence, HR makes sure to solve the issues faced between management level and employee level departments.
  2. Either initiate or self-perform the background verification process of the employee.
  3. Answerable directly to the concerns like the release of payments, date of salaries, reduction in salaries, list of leaves, training period, benefits of being in the organization and so on.
  4. Exchanges or Co-ordinates the administrative functions of their organization to all employees from different processes.
  5. Educates or informs all the important notifications and disclaimers about the Organization. Explains all Do’s and Don’ts. HR informs the conditions, disclaimers and the benefits to the employees either to the group or team of personnel or in person during Orientation.
  6. HR has responsibility for both employee and management levels. Hence the HR should be aware of both managers and employee’s whereabouts.
  7. HR is also responsible to retain the employees if any of the employees choose to leave the Job.
  8. Even after the process of Retention, the employee wants to leave the Organization. HR again is responsible to educate the former employee on different processes after leaving the job. To name a few processes after leaving a job are: PF application method, submitting the company’s belonging like badge, identity card, gadget if any, access card, etc.

Now, when we are aware to some extent as to what are the Roles and Responsibilities of HR.

Let me now tell you about-

Why should HR have to be people oriented?

Why should HR have to be people oriented?
  1. As mentioned above in point number 6, HR should be aware of the employee’s whereabouts, hence HR directly is connected to the employee.
  2. Like how any Finance manager is financed and saving-oriented for an Organization, similarly HR should be people oriented as he/she serves as an ERM to the employees.
  3. Since HR directly connects to the employees of any Organization, HR should be aware on the performance score of every employee, HR is the one who knows where the employee stands or which level has the employee reached.
  4. Based on the scores or performance, HR identifies the areas of opportunity and provides feedback to the employee and suggests what is good or beneficial for both the employee and Organization. Educating the employee about which ladder suits him/her best in terms of building their careers.
  5. Encourages the employee for extracurricular activities within the Organization, so as to get certified and identified at the same time.
  6. HR supports the employees to get the training they deserve or which suits them best.
  7. HR helps the low performers to climb the ladder in the better way, by either changing their respective teams or processes or shift timing and so on.
  8. HR serves as a backbone to both the Organization and the employee by getting the work done.

Final Words to Conclude

From the above points, it is proved that why should HR be people oriented. This is not all, there are many other more and important Roles and Responsibilities of HR including the Job Profile of HR and the reasons for any HR to be employee friendly. HR requires to have a direct connection to both employee level and management level workers.
